Biography
Donal Buggy is Full Professor of Anaesthesia & Perioperative Medicine and Consultant in Anaesthesia at Mater University Hospital, University College Dublin. An elected member of Council of the College of Anaesthetists of Ireland, he chairs the CEPD-Education committee and is Convenor of Irish Congress of Anaesthesia.

He is editorial board member of BJA and the ESA’s Research Committee. A clinician scientist in perioperative interventions’ on postoperative patient outcomes, he is Chairman of EU COST Action 15204, Euro-Periscope, a collaborative network of researchers in the Europe, investigating the potential influence of anaesthesia and analgesia on cancer outcomes.

How certain anaesthetic agents might influence cancer:
Recent new in vitro data will be outlined, on how amide local anaesthetics, propofol and inhalation agents interact with cancer cell biological functions, with potentially beneficial or detrimental effects.

Can anaesthetic technique influence cancer outcome?
This will summarise the current experimental and clinical evidence and will outline likely future developments around this question.
